Dead Man Walking

Dead Man Walking is an opera by American composer Jake Heggie, with a libretto by Terrence McNally based on Sister Helen Prejean’s autobiographical book. It follows Sister Helen as she becomes the spiritual adviser to Joseph De Rocher, a convicted murderer awaiting execution on Louisiana’s death row. Through their relationship, the opera confronts capital punishment, guilt, forgiveness, responsibility, and the possibility of redemption, while refusing to reduce either the victims or the condemned man to simple moral positions.

For the Hungarian State Opera production, directed by András Almási-Tóth, we developed both the set and the visual world around a large V-shaped LED display that formed the central spatial element of the stage. The imagery was inspired by photographs taken by lead singer David Adam Moore during a visit to the Louisiana prison connected to the story. Rather than reproducing these photographs directly, we used them as references for the architecture, atmosphere, textures, and spatial character of the prison, translating documentary observation into a stylised scenic and moving-image environment in which the physical set and digital imagery functioned as a single visual system.
